What is Cenote Azul ?

Cenote Azul (not to be confused with Cenote Azul de Bacalar) is a natural pool located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. It is a type of sinkhole that forms when the limestone rock collapses and exposes the subjacent water table. Cenote Azul is known for its crystal clear waters and amazing rock formations, making it a popular destination for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

Tips for Visiting Cenote Azul

Before visiting Cenote Azul, it is important to keep a few things in mind. First of all, be prepared as the jungle can be very hot and infested with insects.

Also, be sure to wear appropriate footwear for hiking and climbing around the cenote. Finally, be respectful of the natural environment and follow the posted rules to preserve this beautiful hidden gem for future visitors to enjoy.

Bottom line:

To protect the environment, avoid mosquito repellent and sunscreen products, even if they are biodegradable.
It is best to visit the cenote during the week, as it is very popular with Mexican families on weekends, especially on Sundays.
To enjoy a cenote with fewer tourists, I recommend going as early as possible before it opens or closes (more tourists between 10am and 3pm)
Bring your lunch! There are a few tables in the shade and you can bring your own food and drinks (except alcohol).
You can also buy snacks on site
